So you would want a tax lawyer to gel with any unpaid tax issues. If a return was not filed unfortunately the statute of limitations does not begin so they can go back indefinitely (26 U.S.C. § 6501(c)(3)). One would need receipts to claim any applicable deductions (26 U.S.C. § 6001); (26 CFR § 1.6001-1).

Life has happened and I haven't filed taxes for over 10 years. I am now able to take care of these. I was both 1099 and W2 over the years but have very view receipts. I'm assuming it's best to consult a tax lawyer but don't know at what point and what to expect. I would appreciate whatever you can do or tell me to get started on the right track.

I understand that dealing with unfiled taxes can be overwhelming, and I'm here to help you through this process. Have you received any notices or communications from the IRS regarding your unfiled taxes?

About ten years ago my wages were garnished for a few months but lost that job so the garnishment stopped. I have always filed 0 dependents and had the highest withholding so I think there was a good chance had I filed I would've probably gotten a refund because I had travel receipts at then. I've been living with relatives since 2015, not one place for any length of time so it is possible I received communications from them but it never got to me.

Are you currently employed or do you have any income sources that could affect your tax situation moving forward?

Yes. Currently employed and expect that to continue.

Is there anything else the Lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured they'll be able to help with your unfiled taxes.

I turn 65 in June and have just enrolled in Medicare.

Hi! 1st let me say I understand legal issues are emotional and stressful as well. Despite that, I'm here to help. One moment please as I review this. Could you tell me more about your current employment situation and any recent communications from the IRS?

No recent communications of which I am aware. I moved to my (permanent) address in December 2025. Prior to that lived moved around between my children and sister.

I have very few deductions and understand that most of claims will be short form or whatever it is called. So, should I just go back and file all the missed returns and then contact a lawyer if problems arise? Or have a lawyer file the claims and handle things from the beginning?

Got it, thanks for sharing that. You would want to meet with a tax lawyer and sit down and discuss whether it is best to consider a forgiveness program that may waive part of the penalties.

Is there a specific type of tax lawyer I should seek out? Other than personal vs corporate?

For your situation, you should look for a tax lawyer who specializes in personal tax issues, particularly those with experience in dealing with unfiled taxes and IRS negotiations. They can help you navigate the complexities of your case and work towards a resolution.
