I understand your concern about child support in Illinois. Has the child already turned 18 and child support has stopped?

Termination letter went out June 7

Were there any specific circumstances or changes in the financial situation of either parent that might warrant a modification of the child support agreement?

No

Is there anything else the family lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured they'll be able to help with child support termination.

Yes

I’m good, thank you. How are you?

Alex, Esq.

Good, thank you for asking. Glad to hear.

I know you have questions and concerns about child support and going back for it, after the child turns 18. It is frustrating to have to deal with this.

Can you share with me some background? When you say go back for more money, do you mean arrears and support that is owed?

So my son turned 18 graduated high school in Illinois a termination letter went out to my employer June 7. Am I officially done with child support?

I don’t owe anything. I've been paying. I called the courts; no money owed.

Alex, Esq.

Thank you and I do understand. So you are concerned the other parent may still try and get more support?

Yes can she got back and put me back on if he goes to college?

Like, once I'm officially off, can she go back to the courts and get more money?

Alex, Esq.

If you are legally and officially done, that should end your obligation. Any support, once the child turns 18 and goes to college, would have had to been sought by her, when this was all ordered.

To go back and retroactively ask for it, she would need to show good cause or a legal basis to support why it was never sought or asked for.

Yeah I don’t think she went back and ask for anything after high school. I know she filed for modification review, but she never did her part of the paperwork so they just dropped it.

Alex, Esq.

Yes so if it was dropped and dismissed and she never proceeded, that should be the end of it.

Ok, thank you. I was just curious because I didn’t know. I know some states you still have to pay if the child is in college, and that’s fine... I just didn’t know once child support ends and if she could go back and request after everything has stopped.

Alex, Esq.
