How do I verify all required W-2G forms for gambling winnings have been reported?

If a casino or sportsbook was required to issue a Form W-2G, the payer is supposed to file Form W-2G with the IRS and also provide a statement to you. That rule applies to gambling payers generally; the IRS instructions don't carve out a different rule just because the operator is online.

First, not every gambling win generates a W-2G. The IRS says a payer issues a W-2G only for certain reportable winnings or winnings subject to federal withholding, and you must still report all gambling winnings, including winnings not reported on a W-2G.

Second, seeing W-2Gs in your IRS account does not guarantee that every required one is already there. The IRS says Wage and Income Transcripts show third-party forms the IRS has received, but current-year information may not be complete until July, and information can still be missing before then if the payer hasn't filed yet. The IRS's internal guidance is even more specific: current-year Wage and Income Transcripts can be incomplete before July 31.

So the safest answer is:

  • If a W-2G is already showing in your IRS account, the IRS has that form.
  • If a W-2G is not showing yet, that does not prove no W-2G exists, especially early in the year.
  • You still must report all gambling winnings, even if no W-2G appears anywhere.

Use your IRS account as one check, but also compare it against each casino's own tax documents, annual statements, and transaction history. That's the best way to avoid missing a W-2G or missing taxable gambling income that never triggered a W-2G.

The IRS specifically says Wage and Income Transcripts are useful when you didn't retain copies, but they are not a perfect substitute for your own records, especially before July.

I don't have copies of all of my W-2Gs, but I see they are available on IRS.gov. Do online casinos automatically send them to the IRS? I just don't want to miss anything.

I understand how important it is to ensure you have all your tax documents in order. Have you already checked your IRS account for the availability of your W-2Gs?

Yes. I can view them on my IRS account. Does this mean they are all there?
