Unfortunately, in an employment situation with a private employer like this when an employee resigns and gives their two week notice they are essentially saying that they are quitting now but they will continue to work for another 2 weeks if the employer wants them to do so. The employer can accept the resignation and continue to employ the person for an additional two weeks or any lesser time than that including immediately ending the employment relationship.

This reflects the general at-will employment doctrine that governs most private-sector employment relationships in the United States, under which either the employer or the employee may end the employment relationship at any time, for almost any reason, absent a contract stating otherwise.
