I am sorry to hear of these troubles with payment. Here are some steps to take:

  1. Confirm Deadlines for Liens
Each state (Oregon, North Carolina, Washington, Ohio) has strict mechanic’s lien filing deadlines—often ranging from 60–120 days after last furnishing labor or materials. If those deadlines have not expired, filing a lien may be the fastest way to secure payment.

  2. Retain Local Counsel in Each State
Because the projects are in different states, you will likely need attorneys licensed in each state to file liens or lawsuits. A Florida attorney can help coordinate strategy, but liens and lawsuits usually must be handled where the project is located.

  3. Prepare Evidence. The customer should gather:

    • Signed contracts, work orders, or emails confirming the projects
    • Invoices and payment records
    • Copies of all demand letters sent (with dates)
    • Witness statements or proof of completed work
  1. Escalate from Demand to Legal Action

    • If lien deadlines are still open: file liens immediately to secure the debt.

    • If deadlines have passed: file breach of contract lawsuits. Since the total is $52,739, these cases will be in civil court, not small claims.

  2. Consider Consolidation Where Possible
Even though projects are in different states, you should ask their attorney whether they can use a collection firm or multi-state law firm to pursue all claims efficiently.

Immediate Next Step:
You should hire a construction law attorney (or collections attorney) in each state where work was done. They should move quickly, especially if lien deadlines are approaching, because once those pass, leverage is reduced.

I hope that helps!

If at any time you need an attorney to assist you, you can find a local attorney by contacting your local bar association and asking for a referral to one. You can also contact your local legal aid society, as they offer free and low-cost services in these cases. Another good resource is to contact your local law schools, as they often have clinics with attorneys that will assist in these types of cases.

My ultimate goal during our conversation is to ensure that you clearly understand the next steps to take in this matter. Please let me know if you need any clarification on the next steps or have any follow-up questions, as I will be very happy to assist you further.

Ok thanks
