Thank you for sharing these details. From your facts, I am concerned it’s a scam. If so, police and FBI are good options.

If you’ve been the victim of a scam, it’s important to report it to the proper authorities. You can file a report with your local police department, especially if there was a direct financial loss or personal threat. Additionally, you should report the scam to the FBI through the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). These agencies are equipped to investigate criminal fraud.

Be cautious of anyone who asks you to pay money for help recovering your losses. In most cases, that’s a second scam. Because scams involve criminal conduct, your best course of action is to work through law enforcement and government agencies, not private recovery services that promise quick results.

Otherwise, other commercial options exist.

A good first step is often sending a demand letter. This is a formal but straightforward letter where you clearly explain what you’re asking for, set a reasonable deadline for a response, and let the other party know you’re ready to take legal action if needed. Sending this letter can sometimes help resolve the issue quickly and avoid a more stressful legal battle. Even if it doesn’t lead to a settlement, having the demand letter can be very helpful later on if the dispute goes to court.

You can also file a complaint with your state’s Attorney General’s office or the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Both are free and reputable options that can help put pressure on the other party and sometimes lead to a resolution without having to go to court.

If you decide to move forward with legal action, filing a lawsuit is usually the first step. This typically begins by submitting a summons and complaint at your local courthouse. The court clerk can often provide you with the necessary forms and guide you through the process.

Please let me know if these options make sense to you. I am happy to explain anything further. It’s important to me that you fully understand your choices.

Breach of Contract Demand Letter

Full Conversation

I published a book, but the company did not complete what was contracted. On September 1, I gave the company a three-month extension. So far the company has not complied with any part of the extension agreement. I would like to send a letter requesting a refund of $5,450, the balance owed on my investment of $6,450 because they did print the book.

I don't know how to word my request.

I understand how frustrating it can be when a company doesn’t fulfill its obligations. Have you already communicated with the company about your concerns regarding the extension agreement?

I don't know.

What specific terms were included in the original contract and the extension that you believe they have violated?

Yes, I have sent at least four emails, but received no response. The original contract was to print, publish, market my book, create an audiobook. It included a 100% satisfaction guarantee. To date, they have printed the book and sold it on Amazon, but I have not received an accounting of how many books, how much, etc., and there is no audiobook nor examples of any marketing.

Hello, my name is Daniel, and I've been a licensed lawyer for more than 21 years. I’m sorry you’re going through this with the publisher, and I’ll do my best to help. Could you please share a bit more about what happened, including any surrounding circumstances? Even small details can really help me get a clearer picture and make sure I give you the best possible answer.

Hello, my name is Rosalie. Here is what I received on September 9:

"This letter is in reference to our request dated September 1, 2025, regarding the extension of your satisfaction guarantee under the publishing contract between you and our publishing company. We agree to extend your right to invoke the 100% satisfaction guarantee for an additional period of three months, through December 1, 2025. During this time, our team will continue to focus efforts on the production and marketing of your book, with particular attention to the audiobook release. This extension does not waive or diminish your right to claim the 100% satisfaction guarantee at the conclusion of the extension period, should you remain dissatisfied with the results."

From your perspective, what do you think might be driving the other party to act in this way? Do you know if they are legitimate or possibly a scam altogether?

I just want to make sure everything is clear and that you’re comfortable with the information I’ve provided. Is there anything you’d like me to clarify or any other questions you’d like to ask? If everything makes sense and you’re all set for now, you can simply reply “all clear.” Thank you. I’m here if you need anything else.
