[IN] How do I get an affidavit of ownership for my vehicle?

My husband’s truck was impounded. I need an affidavit of ownership for my husband’s vehicle so that we can get it out of the impound lot. I have the bill of sale but I need the affidavit as well and was wondering if you could help me with that.

To start, you'll need to know that an affidavit of ownership is a formal written statement affirming your legal right to the vehicle. Since you already have the bill of sale, you're off to a good start.

The affidavit should include:

  • Your full name and contact info
  • Vehicle details (make, model, year, VIN)
  • A clear statement that you’re the rightful owner
  • How you acquired the vehicle (e.g., through a bill of sale)

In Marion County, Indiana, you can usually create the affidavit yourself or get help from a notary public. Once it's drafted, it must be notarized.

I also suggest contacting the impound lot directly. Some lots have specific requirements or their own forms, so it’s smart to confirm exactly what they need before heading over.

Thank you.
