If you believe that your child was struck or injured (TX Penal Code § 22.04(a)), you would contact a personal injury attorney in your area about this situation. You would also want to report this to the police.

Subject: Legal Guidance Needed – Child Abuse Disclosure at Former Private School

I’m seeking legal guidance regarding a serious disclosure my 10-year-old son recently made in therapy.

During a counseling session (originally scheduled to address a separate bullying incident at his current school), my son revealed that when he was 7 years old and attending a private school in [Texas], he was emotionally, physically (threatened), and psychologically abused by the school’s owner.

He described three separate occasions where he was “abducted into the office” (his words), threatened with harmful language, and almost kicked. He also reported seeing other children taken into the office and returning visibly upset—crying, rubbing their chests, or covering their lower bodies.

We immediately contacted DFPS to report this, but the initial report was marked “not to be investigated.” After my son shared additional details about the other children, I called again the next morning to provide that information but have not received a response.

We are also aware that, during the time our son attended the school, the owner was reportedly involved in an “alleged” sexual harassment scandal that is currently part of an ongoing lawsuit.

At this point, I am unsure of the proper legal steps to take and whether we should pursue this through law enforcement, DFPS follow-up, or civil action. I want to ensure my son’s rights are protected and that any other affected children are safe.

Could you please advise on:

  • The appropriate next steps we should take,
  • Whether we should retain legal representation, and
  • If so, what type of attorney would be best suited for this matter (child abuse, education, or personal injury).

Thank you for taking the time to review this. I can provide written notes of my son’s disclosures and copies of communication with DFPS if helpful.

I'm really sorry to hear about what your son has experienced, Shannon. It sounds very distressing. Could you please let me know if there have been any recent interactions with law enforcement or any agencies following your son’s disclosure?

Just us contacting DFPS.

Have you been able to gather any documentation or evidence related to the incidents at the school, such as written notes from your son or communication with the school or DFPS?

I have emails of the owner resigning when he was inappropriate with his employee who resigned. Nothing written from my son.

Is there anything else the lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured they’ll be able to help with your child abuse disclosure.

Yes.

Hello and welcome! I'm Dan, an expert here.

I’m reviewing your question about your son's experience at his former school in Kingwood, Texas, and will respond again shortly. I know your situation is complicated. Please be patient if I do not respond within a few minutes as I may be completing another customer’s answer before getting back to this one, or may not be in front of my computer. Is there any additional information you think might be helpful?

I'm not sure. I have been told of things over the years about other people having bad or questionable interactions. Posts on Facebook asking about this man, but as I'm not on Facebook, I did not see these things myself.

This was also years ago, but my son just disclosed because he's been afraid.

He said he was almost kicked, but he was pulled roughly by the arm. Would the next step be to contact the police or contact DFPS again?

It would be the police.

Thank you.
