In college I drove with a headlight out and got a ticket. I missed the court date by one day and called in to see about rescheduling. They asked me to bring cash to reschedule. I had no idea I was considered arrested or what any of this meant. I went to court. Still unaware of what was happening, I pled guilty. Then went to the border of Canada and found out I am a felon there, I have an FBI # for contempt of court and I have issues traveling to Canada. I came back from that trip and contacted an attorney who said all I could do was expunge my record and he refused to help me for a headlight ticket. I am now almost 50 and find all of this hard to believe now that I’ve learned more about the system and tickets. What can I do about this?

I was at a restaurant last night. An employee, without asking me and while I was on the phone, picked up my 3-year-old and ran to the back. There were three men in the back. My son started screaming “Mommy, Mommy,” and only then did she bring him back. I was scared and didn’t know what to do. This happened in California. Is there anything I can do? Is this considered kidnapping?

In Wisconsin, if someone absconds while on extended supervision and stays absconded past their maximum discharge date, what procedure does the Department of Corrections follow to extend that person’s maximum discharge date while they’re still absconded? Also — doesn’t the DOC have to give the absconded individual notice of any hearing that extends their maximum discharge date while they’re absconded? If they fail to give notice, isn’t that a Sixth Amendment notice issue or a Fourteenth Amendment due process violation?
