A former Virginia-based employer is asking for repayment of a sign-on bonus “loan” for remaining employed for 16 of the 18 months required for the loan. I am seeking assistance in reviewing the sign-on bonus contract and for representation to propose a prorated repayment amount and potentially set a repayment schedule. I am also open to counsel on the best option to handle this situation.

Yes hello I am a landlord in Virginia. I have a tenant who is only renting my basement bedroom, bathroom, and kitchenette. However, he has taken over the entire basement. Keeps bringing in more and more stuff. I confronted him about it in April but no improvement. I spoke to him again last week and he got rather upset and angry. And Sunday I gave him the 30-day notice to vacate, which made him even more upset.

Hey! Working on this will for my uncle. He is unmarried with no living parents or children. My father, his brother, is his only direct kin. Is he then the heir-at-law by default?

My husband passed in 2023. I am trying to access his Acorns account. I don’t even know if there are funds in it. They said the following: “To proceed with providing any account specific information from his account, we will need Certified Estate Documents or certified documents indicating the funds are bypassing probate (typically called an Affidavit of Small Estate or an Affidavit for Collection of Personal Property). If you are unfamiliar with these documents, you will need to consult with your state’s probate department. We are unable to provide any account information about the decedent’s account without one of these sets of documents.” I just created the affidavit. I live in VA now, but my husband passed in TN. Do I submit this to AZ?

My husband is saying he will not do a divorce settlement until after custody is decided. The court date for the custody trial is June 6, but he or I can file for divorce after May 11, 2025. I told him those are two separate things. Should I go ahead and present him and his lawyer with a proposal for divorce that does not include custody, or am I forced to wait? There was infidelity and alcohol misuse on his part, but proving that wouldn’t be worth the time and energy unless he decides to lowball me. What is your opinion on the back and forth here?

How long would a paying spouse typically pay alimony in Virginia? We were married on September 10, 2011. He left the house on May 10, 2024.

I am starting a business with three members in an LLC, and we as a group will be entering into a business agreement to partner with another LLC that is going under. The agreement ownership reads 40% to the current owner and the new partners (my group) reads 20% per member. Is this a legal agreement giving the group 60% of the business? Also, the Owner wanted to add the following statement: In the event of a disagreement where all parties cannot come to a unanimous agreement after mediation, the final vote will be Current Owner 51%, to the remaining 49% vote. Is this binding and does it not contradict with the ownership agreement of 40 - 60?

I'm separated and in the process of a divorce, and I was diagnosed with cancer. I want to complete my will but want to make sure that my kids get part of the house that should be mine in the divorce.

So right now it’s court ordered that I pay child support, but me and my wife aren’t divorced yet and are working on it. I’m filling out a parenting plan. If it says on the parenting plan that there shall be no child support payments due to either party—because that’s what we have agreed on—would that take away the child support payments I’m currently paying?
